Not every great playground is great for a two-year-old. The big slides and tall towers that make a place fun for older kids can make it stressful for the little ones, and for the parent hovering behind them.
These are our picks for toddlers and little kids: places with scaled-down equipment, soft surfaces, sand and water to play in, and few enough exits that you can sit down for a minute. Number one is built for nothing but toddlers.
A little toddler playground next to the Adventure Playground, with soft rubber lumps that are practically designed for first steps. We came here a lot when my daughter was learning to walk. No rowdy big kids, just calm Upper West Side parents and lots of pacifiers.
A wood-and-sand playground on Central Park's west side that promises the Wild West and delivers a few log stockades. Small-scaled, quiet, and best for ages 2 to 5. The real star is the little river down the middle: great for floating things when it's on, and racing trucks when it's dry.
Like a smaller, newer, more colorful version of River Run, built on a pier. The stream through the middle is perfect for damming with sand and floating things down. Worth a stop if you're near Little Island, but it's small, and I wouldn't go out of my way.
A great playground with play pieces you won't find anywhere else, and perhaps the best slides in the city — carved from granite. The little stage was a big hit, and the SeaGlass Carousel is right nearby. Highly recommended; just note that the bathrooms are closed for renovations.
One of my favorite playgrounds of all time. A giant wooden pipefish, one of the tallest (and definitely fastest) slides in the city, and a splash pad with salvaged stone bull heads and snail jets. Its only flaw is its name — it isn't actually on the water, which may be why it stays a local secret.
